چکیده

Lithium as a plasma-facing component has many attractive features in fusion devices. We investigated chemical properties of the lithiated graphite surfaces during deposition using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and low-energy ion scattering spectroscopy. In this study we try to address some of the known issues during lithium deposition, viz., the chemical state of lithium on graphite substrate, oxide layer formation mechanisms, Li passivation effects over time, and chemical change during exposure of the sample to ambient air. X-ray photoelectron studies indicate changes in the chemical composition with various thickness of lithium on graphite during deposition. An oxide layer formation is noticed during lithium deposition even though all the experiments were performed in ultrahigh vacuum. The metal oxide is immediately transformed into carbonate when the deposited sample is exposed to air. 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. * Corresponding author. Chemical and physical erosion of carbon and metallic substrates containing lithium during low-energy deuterium ion irradiation

Lithium deposition on Grade ATJ graphite substrates and metallic substrates under low-energy D2 irradiation are compared. Transient and steady-state release rate of ejected species are measured for nonlithiated and lithiated ATJ graphite surfaces. Irradiation fluxes of order 10 cm 2 s 1 exposed samples while ejected species are monitored with a line-of-sight quadrupole mass spectrometer. For li...

Ni-Composite Microencapsulated Graphite as the Negative Electrode in Lithium-Ion Batteries I. Initial Irreversible Capacity Study

A novel approach for suppressing the solvated lithium intercalation in graphite was developed by microencapsulating graphite with nanosized Ni-composite particles. The Ni-composite graphite showed great improvement in charge-discharge performance, coulomb efficiency, and cycling behavior when used as the negative electrode in a Li-ion cell with propylene carbonate (PC)-based electrolyte. For ex...

Palladium-microencapsulated graphite as the negative electrode in Li-ion cells

A Pd-encapsulated graphite electrode was used as the negative electrode in Li-ion cells. Through dispersion of ultrafine nanoparticles of palladium on the surface of graphite, the interfacial properties of the carbon surface were modified. The presence of the palladium Ž . dramatically reduces the initial irreversible capacity of the graphite in propylene carbonate PC -based electrolyte. Pallad...
